Patrick Bruce Metheny was born August 12, 1954 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri into a musical family. By age 15 he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, and burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974 with a three-year stint alongside vibraphonist Gary Burton — already displaying his trademark style, blending the loose articulation of a horn player with an advanced harmonic sensibility rooted in melody, swing, and the blues. His 1975 debut album Bright Size Life reinvented the traditional jazz guitar sound for a new generation, launching a ten-year relationship with ECM Records and, in 1977, the formation of the Pat Metheny Group with keyboardist Lyle Mays.

Over five decades Metheny has absorbed modern trends without losing his personal identity — working with avant-garde players like Ornette Coleman, pop artists like David Bowie, and younger experimental musicians, always searching for new contexts for his sound. His music is instantly recognizable: open, wide-screen harmonies, a deep sense of melody, and an emotional arc that often feels like a journey from darkness into light. The Pat Metheny Group won an unprecedented seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums, and Metheny has won 20 Grammy Awards across 10 different categories — a record unmatched by any other artist.
